MIUSA Welcomed High School Exchange Students with Disabilities to the U.S.

Date:

MIUSA’s August arrival orientation helped prepare students with disabilities for a successful year in the United States.

MIUSA welcomed twenty-eight international high school exchange students with disabilities to Eugene, Oregon, August 15th-20th for an arrival orientation prior to the start of their academic year in host communities across the United States.

Together, the students represented sixteen diverse countries, including Armenia, Cameroon, Bosnia and the Philippines. All were selected and received a prestigious scholarship from the U.S. Department of State following a highly competitive application and selection process.

During the MIUSA orientation, students had an opportunity to learn about U.S. disability rights laws, visit a U.S. high school, try adaptive bicycling, and join American peers on a community service project. Photos of the students participating in each activity can be found here.

At the same time, MIUSA staff and a team of educational professionals observed the students’ disability related skills and access needs and compiled those observations in a set of recommendations provided to each student’s support network immediately following the program.
