Independent Living Without Borders

Date:

The largest independent living conference in the U.S. will host an International Track for attendees to understand and advance the independent living movement worldwide.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has provided new and increased opportunities for Centers for Independent Living (CILs) to support the international development of the Independent Living Movement. This year at the 2016 Annual Conference on Independent Living, organized by the National Council on Independent Living, attend sessions that support the conference’s International Track to learn what opportunities exist to connect to and support international development of the movement globally.

Conference-goers of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend the session “How Local Centers for Independent Living Can Impact the International Independent Living Movement,” which will include presentations from these renown disability rights activists:

  • Judith Heumann, Special Advisor for International Disability Rights, U.S. Department of State
  • Marca Bristo, President and CEO of Access Living
  • Susan Sygall, CEO and Co-Founder of Mobility International USA

The session will take place during Concurrent Workshops V (Thursday, July 28, 1:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. local time).

Come get updates about the status of the disability rights movement in countries around the world, what opportunities exist to connect to and support international development at your CIL, and how individuals with disabilities can be citizen diplomats at home and abroad through international exchange and international careers.
