Civic Education Workshop

Date:

MIUSA engaged with high school exchange students with and without disabilities at the Civic Education Workshop in Washington, DC.

In February, MIUSA joined high school exchange students currently in the United States on the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program in Washington, DC, for the Civic Education Workshop (CEW).

The Civic Education Workshop is a one-week program funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The program provides an opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of some of the key concepts and values that are an integral part of U.S. society and culture. Participants learn firsthand about the U.S. federal system of government and other important concepts through seminar discussions, briefings, and meetings on Capitol Hill.

For the second year in a row, CEW students participated in a session on U.S. and global disability rights co-led by MIUSA, Megan Smith, 2030 Agenda Liaison with the International Disability Alliance, and YES student from India, Tanmay Chopra.

In addition to learning about the history of the U.S. disability rights movement, students had an opportunity to share their perspectives on disability rights in their home countries and reflections on what they have learned as students in the United States.

An audio described version of the attached video interview is available on MIUSA’s YouTube channel: miusa1981.
