Get to Know Your (Local) Global Disability Community!
October 26, 2017

Disability rights. Empowerment. Leadership. International experiences. Global activism.

Did you know that the organization Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is working on these issues right here in Eugene, Oregon? In recognition of Disability Mentoring Day, we welcomed local youth with disabilities and others into our office to learn about our work and to explore opportunities for becoming global leaders and world travelers.

Who attended:

  • students and youth with disabilities, including students from the University of Oregon's AccessAbility Student Union and area high schools
  • parents, educators and professionals who support people with disabilities, including an adaptive recreation coordinator and a physical therapist
  • local organizations interested in enhancing their inclusion of people with disabilities, including a higher ed recreation program and an organization promoting girls' wellness

Attendees were invited to:

  • Meet MIUSA CEO and Co-Founder Susan Sygall, a disability rights activist
  • Learn about our global projects and local opportunities to get involved
  • Find out about how people with disabilities can go abroad for study, volunteerism, and more
  • Pick up our free materials to take home
  • Enjoy some light snacks and refreshments

After the event, Susan Sygall reflected on the high energy of those who participated, especially the students with disabilities:

"The pipeline of young leaders with disabilities is strong. It was great to meet so many passionate people looking into international careers, disability rights and other fields."

Couldn't make it in person?
