  • AABRAR has implemented a Bicycle Rehabilitation Program for disabled men and boys to teach them how to ride and repair bicycles according to their individual disabilities. Men and boys travel to AABRAR’s centers in Kabul and Jalalabad to receive this training from their homes in the city and in the provinces. Those who cannot commute home are housed in our hostel for the training which lasts for one month. During this training program trainees also receive literacy and numeracy training. In addition, this program includes physiotherapy and medical treatment, and offers health education, mine awareness, and first aid training to all participants. Various sporting activities such as volley ball are also taught in this program; this encourages recreation while improving mobility. Unfortunately, it remains culturally inappropriate for women to ride bicycles. AABRAR is working to change these community attitudes, and would like to open this program to women in the near future.

  • The Comprehensive Disabled Afghans' Programme (CDAP), implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services, supports the Government of Afghanistan in providing social protection to persons with disabilities (PwD). CDAP is assisting the Government of Afghanistan in developing a National Disability Strategy, supporting institutional reform of the welfare payments division of the Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled (MMD), initiating legislative reform on behalf of MMD, and supporting policy development, particularly in the areas of special education and employment support. CDAP also supports community and rehabilitation programs.

  • IAM is an international association of Christian organizations serving the people of Afghanistan. IAM's projects include the Orthopaedic Workshop and Physiotherapy Center (OWPC) which aims to reduce the impact of disability in Faryab province. It trains Afghan staff to provide services to people with disabilities. It provides orthopaedic appliances and assistive devices, and physiotherapy. OWPC also uses Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) to increase community awareness of disability issues, and to help disabled people with education, healthcare and livelihood development. IAM also runs the Physical Therapy Institute (PTI) in Kabul which trains physical therapists and physical therapy teachers. It develops physical therapy materials and has an outpatient clinic. IAM runs the Primary Mental Health Project (PMHP) in Herat. It provides outpatient psychiatric clinics, including counseling, for those with mental health conditions and those in psycho-social crises. It provides training in mental health for medical students, doctors, nurses and midwives.

  • Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled is currently the principal government agency responsible for disability coordination, advocacy and information dissemination in Afghanistan. MMD is structured to develop and deliver a comprehensive package of services to the disabled community in order to enable effective participation and economic life. It is heavily involved in the development of a national disability policy and strategy so that the needs of disabled people are better served and their rights are ensured. It was first established in 1983 as the Majudiri Y Foundation by the National Council of YMCAs of Malaysia – the YMCA Kuala Lumpur acquired it in 1999 and renamed it the Majudiri Y Foundation for the Deaf.The Foundation aims to enhance the welfare and social well being of Deaf people and to enable them to participate fully in society and our nations’ development.
