With many interviews, this report describes frequent abuse and discrimination by strangers, neighbors, and even family members against women and girls with disabilities in the north. This research investigates the experiences and coping mechanisms of people with motor disabilities in accessing water and sanitation facilities in Butajira, Ethiopia. It offers suggestions for meeting their needs through improved design of water and sanitation facilities as well as through addressing social stigma in the community.

Knowledge, personal risk and experiences of HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities in Swaziland (Yousafzai, Dlamini, Groce, Wirz, 2004) (pdf)

This study shows participants with disabilities from Swaziland were less well informed about HIV/AIDS, listing many more incorrect modes of transmission than their non-disabled peers. The study also poses that HIV awareness programmes need to ensure information reaches people with disabilities by working with disabled people’s organizations and by adapting education materials.

Making PRSP Inclusive: Christian Blind Mission and Handicap International

The World Bank has released a new handbook compiled by Handicap International (HI) and Christian Blind Mission (CBM) on "Making PRSP inclusive". The handbook presents background information and guidelines for key stakeholders on disability and development such as governments, UN agencies, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) and facilitate that people with disabilities may enter and participate in national Poverty Reduction Strategy processes (PRSP). This resource also includes a toolbox for making PRSP inclusive.
