“We should not wait for what people will do for us, but we should try to create impact and make our contributions felt in society.”
– WILD-Uganda participant

Putting the infiltration strategy to the test, Mobility International USA (MIUSA) awarded seed grants to alumni of the Women’s Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD) program from 2012 – 2017. The main objectives were to continue building their capacity as leaders and to develop long-term partnerships with international development and human rights organizations working in their communities.

WILD delegates returned home with specific plans and practical action steps for increasing inclusion and achievement of rights for women with disabilities at local, national and international levels. They used skills and resources acquired at WILD to create and strengthen community organizations, and implemented projects in a range of sectors, including civil and human rights advocacy, education, literacy, employment, HIV/AIDS and violence prevention, and health.

The WILD seed grants program supported 37 WILD alumni in 33 countries. In 2012 – 2014, seed grants support WILD participant action plans. In 2016-17, the seed grants supported WILD Participants to implement WILD In-country trainings.

In countries where WILD is scaling up, we are building a critical mass of women leaders with disabilities who are empowered and prepared to advocate for their rights as well as infiltrate the mainstream. As women with disabilities gain more power and presence, this will have a profound impact on human rights movements and change the face of community development.
