FAQ: Blind Student Going to the U.K.

I am Blind and have just been accepted for a program at the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom. Do you have any information about accessibility?

The University of Minnesota and their Access Abroad program conducted a site visit to determine the accessibility of the University of Lancaster.  You can read about their findings on their website.  Mobility International USA also has information about the accessibility of other universities around the world through their site visit iniative.

The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) staff has compiled information about various countries around the world including England.  We will send you this country sheet containing information about the accessibility of transport, service dog information, and disability organizations that may be of assistance to you while you are in the country.

As a matter of fact, you may want to contact the Royal National Institute for the Blind or the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities (SKILL) while you are there to see what additional resources they may be able to provide you in addition to those offered by the Disability Services office and your exchange program.

The stories of other individuals with disabilities who have been to England on exchanges can be found on our on-line A World Awaits You Magazine.  Or you can also talk to others who have been to England by requesting a peer from our peer network.
