FAQ: Getting Medicines in Greece for MS

by admin last modified November 16, 2006 10:19

I am a student with multiple sclerosis and am currently on medicaid. I am going to Greece next year on a program and the program includes accident and illness insurance. One medication I take is quite expensive. Is there any way that I will be able to obtain it in Greece?

I would suggest that you do some telephoning and/or e-mailing before leaving the United States.  Contact the Greek Multiple Sclerosis Society as they will be a good resource for you while in Greece and may know about the medication and where you can find it.  Contact the Embassy of Greece to find out what laws Greece has pertaining to the medication.  You may be able to bring a sufficient supply with you if you have the appropriate documentation and if your insurance company/Medicaid will work with you.  Be sure that all prescriptions are in the original containers, with labels, and have the doctor write out the medication's purpose and have it translated into Greek.  Double-check if any immunizations that are needed interact with the medication.

You can find English speaking doctors in Greece through the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers.  Find out more about this topic by visiting our informational tip sheet on this subject.
