FAQ: Russian Study for Wheelchair User

by admin last modified November 16, 2006 13:19

I have a chance to go on a study abroad tour to St. Petersburg, Russia. I am a C6 Quad and pretty independent but I wondering do you know of any resources about the accessibility in St. Petersburg?

The St. Petersburg Rehabilitation and Recovery of Invalids Organization provides information and referrals on infrastructure and accessibility.  Their e-mail is spboviri@mail.wplus.net.  Tourist offices and tour companies are also an excellent sources regarding the accessibility of a city and its tourist sites.  Try contacting the Russian National Tourist Offices in New York at (212) 575-3431 or you can try contacting a tour agent such as Lapina Darya who operates tours for wheelchair users.  Her e-mail is bigblins@yandex.ru.

The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) staff also maintain country sheets on a number of countries that offer general information about accessibility, service dog information, in-country disability organizations, and exchange organizations that have programs in the country.  We can send you our country sheet on Russia if you are interested.

We also maintain a peer network that will allow you to communicate with an individual with a disability who has been to Russia.  Go to our Peer Network to request the e-mail or phone number of an individual who has been to Russia.
