FAQ: Limited Mobility and Teaching Abroad

by admin last modified November 16, 2006 13:19

I have severe nerve damage and can only utilize one arm. However, I love golf and would like to teach it to youth overseas. Do you know of any programs that would allow me to do this?

You may want to contact golf organizations for those with physical disabilities directly.  It is possible that they may have some overseas contacts.  Try contacting the Physically Challenged Golf Association, Inc. at 1-800-676-2035 or the United States Golf Association Resource Center for Individuals with Disabilities.  You can even try contacting an overseas organization such as The Handigolf Foundation in the United Kingdom.

With a desire to teach such a skill, you may want to think about studying to become a recreational therapist and then you could look into study abroad programs that specialize in this area.  Go to our homepage and click on "Search for Exchange Programs" to look for potential programs, check with your university study abroad office, or look at organizations listed on other search engines such as Study Abroad. You could also check teaching programs or volunteer programs under these same databases to see if they offer the opportunity to teach golf or sports.
