People with disabilities can apply for any scholarships if they meet other eligibility requirements. Some scholarships may be available exclusively to people with disabilities, women, Americans or non-US citizens, or those pursuing certain degree programs. The Youth Foundation offers a small number of scholarships intended to help high school youth travel with their class, youth group, or for other educational purposes. Scholarships are generally around $600, and in some cases up to $1,000.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program offers up to $5000 per scholarship to students with demonstrated financial need and encourages underrepresented students in study abroad to apply (including students with disabilities). Applicants must be U.S. citizens currently receiving Federal Pell Grant Funding.

Applicants for the Boren Scholarship must be United States citizens, a high school graduate (or hold a GED), attending an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited higher education institution, and must want to study abroad in a country outside of the Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Scholarships can worth up to $20,000 for a full academic year (or up to $10,000 for a semester). For fellowships, the maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 over 24 months. In exchange for funding the scholarship, Boren Scholars are required to work for at least a year with a department of the Federal Government that holds national security responsibilities.

Critical Language Scholarship, administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for US citizens in either undergraduate or graduate programs. Languages include but are not limited to Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Korean, Turkish, Chinese, and Russian. The program is part of a US government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

AG Bell offers a number of scholarships for undergraduate students with pre-lingual hearing loss ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. In order to be eligible, applicants must meet the following conditions: Spoken communication must be the primary mode of communication; the hearing loss must have been diagnosed before the applicant’s 4th birthday; the hearing loss must be bilateral and in the moderate-to-profound range; applicant must be enrolled in or have applied to an accredited college/university as a full-time student; and U.S. applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. Non-U.S. applicants must have a minimum 80% cumulative on their transcripts or the equivalent of a 3.25 GPA. For example, in the UK, Australia and India, a minimum of an Upper Second Class ranking is required.

Email: Submit online form on website The Paul G. Hearne AAPD Leadership Award is an annual award that honors emerging leaders with disabilities working in the cross-disability civil rights movement. Up to two individuals are selected annually to be featured at the AAPD Leadership Gala and to each receive $10,000 to help them continue their progress as leaders. U.S. residents with any type of disability are eligible to apply.

The American Council of the Blind offers annual scholarships to legally blind undergraduate and graduate students in the United States, ranging from $500 to $4,000. Applications must be completed online and only approved documents will be accepted via mail. Applicants must have already been accepted to a post-secondary school.

The American Foundation for the Blind offers scholarships to students who are legally blind or have a visual acuity of 20/200 in the better eye with best correction or a visual field of no greater than 20 degrees. Applications must be completed online, and should already have been accepted into a post-secondary school.

Scholarship amounts are dependent upon available resources, but are generally around $500. The financial awards are only given to undergraduate students who are legally blind (20/200 with correction) and who are planning to attend college as a full-time student in order to become independent and self-supporting upon graduation.

The CCLVI, affiliated with the American Council of the Blind, offers scholarships of up to $3,000 for full-time college students who have low vision. Semi-finalists will be asked to participate in a telephone interview with committee members, and winners will be notified in the spring. Winners are expected to attend a meeting of the Council, generally held in the first week of July.

Gallaudet provides scholarships for students who attend its school, but it also provides a listing of potential scholarship sources for students with disabilities, including Deaf students, students who survived cancer, students who are blind, and many others.

Lighthouse International provides scholarships to college and graduate students with vision loss. Applicants must be legally blind (that is, have a best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees in the better eye), citizens of the United States, currently attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university.

Blind undergraduate or graduate students attending college in the United States can win one of thirty national scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $12,000. All applicants must be legally blind, must currently be living in the United States, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico, and must be planning to attend an undergraduate or graduate program full-time at an accredited college. Winners must be able to attend the National Federation’s annual convention, usually held in July.

Three scholarships are administered by the Moss Society. The Judith Cary Memorial Scholarship is for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in special education. The Anne and Matt Harbison Scholarship is for a graduating high school senior with a language-related learning difference who is intent on pursuing a post-secondary education. The Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship is intended for high school seniors with language-related learning disabilities who demonstrate financial need and are planning a career in the visual arts.

The Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Award is granted to RFB&D members who are blind or visually impaired and are either in an undergraduate or graduate program. There are a total of nine students chosen, and the scholarship amount ranges from $1,000 to $6,000 per person. The Learning through Listening Awards are for high school seniors with learning disabilities. Six students are chosen, with awards ranging from $2,000 to $6,000.

The SVI-SA Program supports visually impaired Japanese or special permanent resident men or women for graduate study or studies in an academic program at an accredited university or research institution abroad. Applicants must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score as part of their application.

Snowdon offers scholarships that help to cover the additional costs of being disabled. Financial assistance can be used for accommodations such as sign language interpreters, computer equipment, note takers, travel costs, mobility equipment, etc. Applicants must have a physical or sensory disability and be attending a college or university in the United Kingdom. People may not apply for the award if they are studying outside of the UK. All applicants have to be attending a course that is based in the UK. If you have to go abroad as an integral part of your course, you may apply for disability-related expenses. Awards typically range from £250 to £2,500.

The Spina Bifida Association awards a one-year scholarship to a high school graduate or a student who holds a G.E.D. Up to six scholarships may be awarded, and award amounts can be anywhere up to $2,000. Applicants must have Spina Bifida as determined by a physician, and must have been accepted by a four-year university, junior college, or an approved trade/vocational/business school.

The Young Soloist award is an annual scholarship worth $5,000 for young musicians with disabilities. Musical ensembles of 2 to 8 members may also apply.  Musicians who are from the United States must be 25 years old or under. Musicians from outside the United States must be 30 years old or under.

LIVFund will award two scholarships per month to selected recipients in the amount of $500 USD each. LIVFund Scholarships are open to anyone over the age of 18 interested in learning, interning or volunteering abroad in Latin America. Candidates may apply for the LIVFund Scholarship at any time, beginning six months in advance of their program start date. Candidates coming to Latin America with an organized program, designing their own program or still waiting to be accepted to an abroad program are all eligible to apply. Students, interns and volunteers who are already abroad may also eligible to receive funding.

Freeman-Asia awards are scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with a demonstrated financial need and who want to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and will award funds of up to $5,000 for a semester or quarter abroad and up to $7,000 for an academic year abroad.

USINDO awards grants worth up to $2,000 to U.S. students for travel to Indonesia or to Indonesian students for travel to the United States to conduct field research or for other professional projects, including conferences. The grant is intended to promote academic and other exchanges between the United States and Indonesia. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

The Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation will provide monetary awards for international Ph.D. candidates enrolled in any graduate school located in the Kanto area of Japan. The Japan Foundation offers a number of grant programs and fellowships to support organizations and individuals in Japanese studies, in Japanese language, and in supporting the arts and culture of Japan. Proposed projects must have appropriate methods in order to yield positive results, and projects cannot be for religious or political purposes.

CPE Scholarships for Chinese Study

Scholarships offered under the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) are available to students whose schools can accept credit-transfer from their school's Chinese partner university. Scholarships cover all in-country costs, including tuition, housing, and a stipend. They do not cover airfare to China. To apply, study abroad offices should contact partner universities in China directly and ask about the CPE scholarships available to their students. The DAAD of New York provides a number of scholarships for undergraduates who are looking to study or intern abroad in Germany. Preference is given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. German language competence is not necessary, but students should express an interest in contemporary German and European affairs.

The Sons of Norway Foundation established several funds to promote cultural exchange through higher learning. The King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund welcomes applications from Americans and Norwegians over 18 who are interested in cultural exchange and exploration at a higher learning institution. The Foundation also offers one scholarship each year for a student to attend the Oslo International Summer School, a scholarship for youth to study at a Norwegian high school, and a scholarship for post-high school study abroad experience in any country. Applicants must be Sons of Norway members or relatives to be eligible for some awards.

Marshall Scholarships are available to United States citizens who have or will have a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7, and who want to further their study in the United Kingdom. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded annually, and cover university fees and other expenses. The traditional Marshall Scholarship is tenable for two academic years.

Available in Italy, Germany and Hungary only, these grants are designed to supplement either an award from any source that does not provide international travel or a student's own funds for study or research. Grants may only be available for those in specific fields of study or research, such as the creative and performing arts. Eligibility requirements for full Fulbright Grants apply.

The award honors young women ages 16 to 19 who are in secondary level or pre-university schools. These women demonstrate a commitment to leadership in public policy, government, and/or volunteer organizations. District award winners receive $1,000 and five international recipients are selected from the district applications to receive awards of $3,000. The award is open to citizens of any country and who are knowledgeable about Zonta International and its mission.

The Jane M. Klausman scholarship is intended for women who are pursuing a business or business-related degree at an accredited college or university. Zonta International, the organization behind the scholarship, gives awards of $1,000 to district winners and provides twelve international scholarships of $5,000 each.

Each year, more than $1.5 million is dispersed through cash awards at various levels of the organization. Recipients of the Women’s Opportunity Awards, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol abuse, may use the awards to offset any cost associated with their efforts to acquire higher education (including books, childcare, and transportation). Applicants must be women who are the primary financial support for their families, who are enrolled in (or have been accepted in) a vocational training program or an undergraduate degree program, demonstrate financial need, and are residents of one of the 19 countries represented by Soroptimist International.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is an annual award for women pursuing Ph.D. or doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship is worth $10,000 and is awarded to 35 Fellows from around the world each year. The funds may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

AAUW International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are full-time graduate or post-graduate and not United States citizens or permanent residents. The duration of the fellowship is one year and awards range from $18,000 to $30,000. American Fellowships support women scholars completing doctoral dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research, or finishing research for publication who are United States citizens or permanent residents.

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) awards educational grants to women from developing countries whose graduate studies and plans aim to help women and children in their home countries. The grants are awarded annually and are worth approximately $12,000.

The PEO International Peace Scholarship provides funds for women from other countries to study in the United States and Canada. Applicants must be planning to commit or are already committed to full-time graduate study at an American or Canadian college or university. The maximum award amount is $10,000 but smaller amounts may be awarded depending on individual needs. American high school seniors may apply for a STAR Scholarship for undergraduate study. American women pursuing doctoral or post-doctoral research are eligible to apply for a Scholar Award.

Classes are taught by internationally renowned artists, and workshops, interdisciplinary activities, performances, and exhibitions are provided. Successful applicants are ranked by award levels, with Gold Award winners earning $10,000; Silver winners get $5,000, and so on.

National AMBUCS Inc. awards scholarships to undergraduate therapy students in their junior or senior year or to graduate therapy students working toward a masters or doctoral degree. Awards generally range from $500 to $1,500, although there is one two-year award worth $6,000. NHF’s Judith Graham Pool Postdoctoral Research Fellowship program has provided a long legacy of support for basic science and pre-clinical research in bleeding disorders. Judith Graham Pool (JGP) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship candidates must have completed doctoral training and apply for the JGP fellowship award from a doctoral, postdoctoral, internship or residency training program. Applicants must be affiliated with domestic organizations such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories. U.S. citizenship is not required.
