Learning English in the United States

by Olivia Emilia last modified September 29, 2008 13:04

There is no better way to learn English than to learn from and live among native speakers. Learning English in the U.S. is a great way to learn about U.S. culture, gain an advantage to put on your resume, and/or improve your English so that you can be admitted into a U.S. university!

An online searchable version of the Institute of International Education's Intensive English USA publication lists English language programs across the United States. Also find out about earning an English language certificate at Language Learning website.

Get Going!

English language class in New York CityA lot of information and resources exist to help you plan your experience.  Start with the finding a program in the online databases listed above and learning about disability-related issues in the United States on the Opportunities in the U.S. page. Then browse flight rates and booking, research disability organizations, and network with others who have participated in international exchange in the United States and who have disabilities.

Read information from students with disabilities attending the American English Institute in Eugene, Oregon, USA or other stories in our A World Awaits You journal ("Accessing Foreign Languages" issue).

Note any helpful resources and record any advice you would pass on to others considering exchange programs in the U.S.  Once you find the program and location that feels right for you, we wish you the best here in the United States!  Remember to share your story with us along the way.  Your advice and experience may motivate others to follow in your footsteps!  If you would like to talk to us about publishing your story or blog on our website, please contact us at clearinghouse@miusa.org.
