Free Online Resources for Learning Critical Need Languages

Do you want to learn a foreign language on your own or need supplemental activities to help you practice the language? Here's a sampling of the many free resources available on the Internet.

A U.S. exchange participant tries to write in Arabic

Learn Arabic 

Online Arabic Course teaches you basic sentences, how to write, how to count and introduces Arabic grammar. The lessons are in Modern Standard Arabic and include audio.

Learn Chinese
Clear Chinese includes a free Mandarin Chinese course in 15 units, lessons on Chinese writing, and an online dictionary.

Learn Hindi

This website includes a Hindi words section, a grammar section, a literature section, slang, teaching resources, and links to Hindi language schools.

Learn Japanese
Genki Japan features songs, games, Japanese basics, and information about what happens each month in Japan for children to learn more about Japanese language and culture.

Learn Korean
KOSNET is a website offering educational spaces to learn the Korean language through the Internet. Free registration is required. Resources include Korean lessons for children and adults, downloadable self-study materials, and a collection of useful links.

Learn Russian
eLanguageSchool has a compilation of basic learning resources, including grammar lessons, for Russian as well as nine other languages.
