Travelers with Purpose Photo Contest '08 - Deadline Extended!

Due to overwhelming interest, MIUSA has decided to extend the submission deadline to June 30, 2008. Submit your photos for a chance to win great prizes, and share your experiences around the world!

Travelers with Purpose Photo Contest '08 - Photos of people with disabilities around the worldAre you a person with a disability? Have you been abroad to study, volunteer, teach, intern or research? Do you have photos? Share them with the world!

Mobility International USA (MIUSA) and the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) want your photos for a full-color, 12-month 2009 calendar and screensaver.

Deadline: June 30, 2008

Prizes

The first place photograph will be featured on the cover of our full-color calendar and on a screensaver. Second and third place photos, along with ten other honorable mention photos, will be featured in the calendar and screensaver. All contest entrants whose photographs are chosen for the calendar will receive a copy of the calendar and screensaver.  

What We Are Looking For

High quality photos depicting people with various disabilities (apparent and non-apparent) taking part in overseas experiences:  studying, volunteering, teaching, interning or participating in an international educational experience.

Suggested themes include:

  • Local life / Interaction with the local population
  • Participating in cultural events
  • Working / Volunteering / Community Service
  • Teaching / Classroom settings
  • Enjoying the landscape and architecture
  • Taking part in adventure
  • Using public transportation

All photos entered in the contest should adhere to the ethics of cultural sensitivity

Submission Guidelines and Contest Rules

Please read carefully prior to filling out entry form

  • Photos must be submitted in digital format (jpeg, TIFF) on a CD with a brief description of the photo, including who is in the photo, what it is of, where and when it was taken, the name of program (if any) and by whom the photograph was taken. Please make sure corresponding photo file names are included with descriptions if more than one photo is submitted. (See Contest Entry Form).
  • Photos must be at least 500kb in size. 
  • Photos must be submitted by either the photographer or person appearing in the photograph if the photograph(s) was/were taken with the subject's camera. 
  • If recognizable people are portrayed, the subject(s) must have given the photographer permission or informed consent to have the photograph taken.
  • By submitting photographs to this contest, contest entrants thereby give permission to Mobility International USA (MIUSA), the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE), the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and members of the NCDE Roundtable Advisory Board Consortium (RTC) to use submitted photographs in the calendar, screensaver, future print and online publications as well as promotional and marketing materials. 
  • It is the contest entrant's responsibility to assure that submitted photographs are the sole and exclusive property of the contest entrant and that exclusive rights to the photograph have not been given or sold to any other organization or person.  
  • Although disclosing specific information about a subject's or photographer's disability is optional, it is asked that in the description of each photo at least some general information regarding the disability of the subject and/or photographer is included, i.e. physical disability, learning disability, blind, Deaf, etc. This information is intended for use in photo captions.
  • Contest is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.
  • Contest entrants must be over the age of 18 or have legal parent or guardian sign the Contest Entry Form.
  • Photos must be original and not altered digitally. Minor cropping is acceptable.
  • All photos must be accompanied by a signed Contest Entry Form.
  • There is no limit to how many photos may be submitted by one person, however there is a one prize limit for each person entering the contest.
  • Photos must be submitted in digital format on a CD with accompanying Contest Entry Form to:

  • Submissions must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2008. Submissions postmarked after June 30, 2008 or incomplete submissions will not be considered for this contest. Photo submission deadline may be extended at the discretion of NCDE / MIUSA.
  • Photos will be selected by the NCDE Project Director, NCDE staff, and a representative of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
  • Winners will be notified within 30 days after final submission deadline and prizes awarded shortly thereafter via U.S. Post to the name and address submitted on the entry form. 
  • Shipping charges for prizes will be the responsibility of MIUSA / NCDE. Any applicable taxes on prizes will be the responsibility of the prize winners.
  • Calendars and Screensavers will be sent to winners and available for purchase in November, 2008.
  • There is no fee to enter this contest.
  • This contest is not open to MIUSA, ECA or RTC staff or staff family members.
