Growing Up with a Disability: Costa Rica Cross Cultural/Cross Disability Leadership Exchange

by Melissa Mitchell last modified August 09, 2007 18:11

Read about the adventures of David Gayes and the other delegates who spent several weeks this summer learning what it means to have a disability in Costa Rica.

David Gayes is a 21-year-old  taking a year away from college to work on a project about people with disabilities.  He has been interviewing people about their experiences living with a disability and records their stories and his reflections on his blog. David has also been a peer mentor and participant in the Illinois Youth with Disabilities Leadership Summit.  Last year he was awarded the Justin Dart Jr. “Lead On” Award for demonstrating “strength of character and leadership potential”.  David enjoys singing in his church choir, reading and playing fantasy sports.  David is quadriplegic and uses a specialized power wheelchair and a personal assistant. David shares his Costa Rican adventures on his blog Growing up with a Disability.
