My Experience in Costa Rica

By Erick López

When I applied to MIUSA's International Exchange Program to Costa Rica I did not have an expectation of actually going.

Imagine how excited I was when I got the notification letting me know that I was going to Costa Rica. I was ecstatic about this great opportunity.

The trip to Costa Rica was my first international experience. From the day that I was selected, I did nothing but count down the days. I was making my family sick. I got ready, took care of all of the necessary preparations. The only thing that I did not have to do was learn or practice Spanish since I already speak the language. I was all set for my trip, starting out of Chicago on July 12, 2001.

The moment we arrived in Costa Rica, I felt at home. You see, I am originally from Puerto Rico. It is a similar environment. Driving from the airport to the hotel, I couldn't take my eyes off the landscape. I felt like I was back in Puerto Rico.

One of the most frightening experiences of the entire program came on our first full day in Costa Rica, when it came time to meet our homestay families. Everyone on the trip was semi-prepared for this experience. Everyone was nervous about how they would communicate with their family members and what surprises would come with traditional Costa Rican food.

The first night with my homestay family was spent getting to know one another. My homestay parents were excited to have an American guest who spoke fluent Spanish. We spent hours talking about Chicago and my family. I showed family pictures and they showed me some of their pictures. I had a great experience staying with a homestay family. I believe I am the only one whose family had four kids, ages 6 to 21. The house was never quiet, something was always going on.

My experience in Costa Rica was nothing but positive. It left me wanting to return. For my first international travel experience, I could not have had a better time. I hope that the friendships we made during our two week trip are long lasting, if only through email.
