All alumni of MIUSA’s Women’s Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD), the women photographed in this book are confronting discrimination and working tirelessly to improve the lives of women and girls with disabilities across the globe.
With a unified voice, women with disabilities are successfully articulating their needs, issues and achievements to the world and infiltrating broader human rights and gender equality movements.
Their stories illustrate issues that significantly impact the lives of women with disabilities, including access to education, employment, political power, reproductive health services, and HIV/AIDS and violence prevention.
The book accompanies the Brilliant & Resilient Photo Exhibit, which features a collection of 30 selected photos and vignettes. The photographic exhibition and book honor the 1995 U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, a historic event that ignited the international disabled women’s rights movement.
The project also highlights the crucial role of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in advancing the status of women with disabilities, as well as the importance of ensuring women with disabilities are included in all efforts to reach the U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Revenues from book sales support the next generation of emerging women leaders with disabilities to participate in MIUSA’s leadership trainings.
