NAFSA 2016 Annual Conference Highlights Disability Inclusion

Date:

In Denver, we networked with IE professionals to ensure that students with disabilities have access to study, volunteer, research, and intern abroad. Now we invite you to sustain these efforts through your regional NAFSA network.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators hosted the 2016 Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, Colorado with the theme “Building Capacity for Global Learning”.

MIUSA was excited to meet many exchange professionals to discuss disability inclusion at the below sessions, exhibits, and meet-up groups.

MIUSA Sessions and Exhibits

  • Session: Power in Partnerships: Effective Support for International Students with Disabilities
  • Session: Fulbright and Mobility International USA: Innovative and Inclusive
  • Meet-Up: NAFSA: International Education for Persons with Disabilities, (IEPD) Member-Interest Group (MIG) Meeting
  • Poster session: Experiential Abroad: Access for Students With Disabilities poster session

Highlights:

For the #Access2USA campaign, which aims to increase participation of international students with disabilities in U.S. higher education, MIUSA staff presented a session on the “Power of Partnerships” to discuss strategies for university staff to proactively engage, educate, and prepare international students with disabilities about reasonable accommodations and disability culture in the U.S.

Fulbright and MIUSA partnered up to discuss “Fulbright: Innovative and Inclusive” to highlight best practices from Middle Tennessee State University for inclusive outreach, to provide recruitment and advising tips and resources, and to highlight recent collaborations between MIUSA and Fulbright to seek and support more students with disabilities for Fulbright awards.

Now What:

MIUSA connected with many exchange professionals who utilize the National Clearingouse on Disability and Exchange resources for their students and staff, but there remains professionals who are not aware of the resources and need the information.

We enocurage your office to present at NAFSA regional conferences on disability inclusion and to contact our office to support your session. Share the wealth of knowledge and make sure together we work to make sure international education is available to everyone!
