Increasing Sports Opportunities for Armenian Youth with Disabilities in Miusa

Date:

Bringing together athletes, professionals, and sports leaders to expand opportunities for youth with disabilities to engage in sports in Armenia.

MIUSA will bring 10 Armenian professionals to the U.S. for a 12-day program to continue dialogues and collaborative plans with U.S. participants to promote sport opportunities for youth with disabilities in Armenia. This program is part of the U.S. government’s foreign policy efforts to remove barriers and create a world in which disabled people enjoy dignity and full inclusion.

The focus will be on priorities such as:

  • Sports and recreation programs for youth with disabilities
  • Coach training for aquatics, powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, cycling
  • Sports programming, development, and management
  • Sport and fitness for women and girls with disabilities
  • Introducing the Paralympic Sports Club model

In June 2014, a group of five U.S. professionals traveled to Armenia for the first part of the reciprocal exchange designed to address priorities identified by the local disability communities in Armenia. Read about the U.S. delegation in “U.S. Sport Professionals Travel to Armenia” and view the photo gallery of their visit to Armenia that included U.S.-led adaptive sports demonstrations, meetings with Armenian athletes and coaches, cultural excursions, and visits with diplomats including the U.S. Ambassador. This program is sponsored by the SportsUnited Division of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
