For this year’s CIEE annual conference, the theme looks at students today as having been “born digital”:
They have never known a world without broadband internet, smartphones, or the ability to reach into their pocket for the answer to almost any question. They are resourceful researchers and future-focused pragmatists who fully expect to be successful on their own terms.
So how does this influence the study abroad community, including students, faculty, and staff? This is influencing the field of international education by how programs utilize technology for recruitment and marketing strategies for one and also impacts a students experience by use of multiple apps while abroad, including navigation tips.
There are so many new opportunities with the use of technology, but as the speed of technology advancements grow, we also have to stop and make sure students with disabilities are not being missed from these opportunities!

“Turning to Technology: Emerging Access for Students with Disabilities“:
Even though the numbers are steadily rising, people with disabilities are still significantly underrepresented in international exchange programs. One reason for this, is the incorrect assumption that other countries are not accessible to people with disabilities. This session will identify barriers people with disabilities and their advisors encounter when researching exchange opportunities, specific technologies that can remove these barriers for the exchange participant, and finally, how exchange programs can use technology to bolster a mission of inclusion.

- Monica Malhotra, Project Manager, National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE), Mobility International USA (MIUSA)
- Emma Verrill, CIEE alumnus with a disability who studied in Rennes, France
- Morgan Reiss, CIEE Resident Director – Spain
