What Statistics Tell Us about People with Disabilities in International Exchange

By choosing to look at certain data, it causes each of us to think about diversity in international programs, or opportunities for international travel as part of disabled peoples’ lives.

Mobility International USA is always looking for surveys or research in the disability or international education fields that have the potential to shine a light on the participation and experiences of people with disabilities in international exchange. If surveys ask both “Do you have a disability?” and “Did you [study, volunteer, intern, teach, research] abroad?,” then we do our best to request and report on the data, so we can all learn more from the findings.

Looking at these statistics helps to reduce assumptions and inform us about people with disabilities participation in international activities.

Also it allows for comparison between years, disability groups, and between people with and without disabilities, which may show similarities, reveal underrepresentation, or point to gaps that need to be improved.

Statistics are currently available from the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, National Survey on Student Engagement, and the internationally-benchmarked International Student Barometer from i-graduate. See the Table of Contents to get started.
