Commitment
Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is a US-based nonprofit organization with the mission to empower people with disabilities around the world through international exchange and international development. MIUSA offers educational and professional internships throughout the year, and internships typically last 3-6 months. Internship openings depend on program needs. Interns must be able to commit to at least 10 hours per week and work in our office in Eugene, Oregon.
Types of Internship Opportunities
MIUSA Exchange Internship
Each year in Eugene, Oregon, MIUSA hosts exchanges for youth, young adults and professionals from around the world. These exchanges focus on leadership training, community service, recreation, cross-cultural learning and advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities.
MIUSA 30th Anniversary
MIUSA is celebrating 30 years of empowering people with disabilities to achieve their human rights through international exchange and international development! Join the celebration of this landmark in our organization's history.
National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange
The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) is one of MIUSA’s ongoing projects. Established in 1995, the goal of the NCDE is to increase the participation of people with disabilities in the full range of international educational opportunities, which it does through free advice and referrals, technical assistance, and outreach materials. NCDE is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by MIUSA. Interns assist the NCDE team with research, contributing fresh content to the NCDE website and updating existing content, preparing materials for conferences, advancing our social media outreach and more.
International Development and Disability
Projects vary in scope, from researching international development organizations to organizing international exchange programs. Development interns assist the IDD team with all aspects of a specific program, including project planning and coordination, public relations and resource development. Interns gain valuable knowledge and understanding of current international development and disability issues, as well as the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the development process. As a member of the growing international network of women with disabilities, MIUSA interns continue our work in leadership development and the inclusion of women with disabilities in international development programs and activities.
Combination
An intern may focus specifically on one of the above areas or combine several. This depends on the interests and skills of the intern and on the MIUSA projects available at the time of the internship. MIUSA staff work cooperatively on many projects and interns may have the chance to become involved in other projects that arise. All interns will have the opportunity to gain skills in general office maintenance and management.
Other Considerations
Compensation
Internships with MIUSA are unpaid.
Health Insurance
MIUSA does not provide health insurance for U.S. interns. MIUSA does recommend that interns have their own US health insurance coverage while at MIUSA.
Housing
MIUSA does not provide housing for interns. We do have information on accessible & affordable local apartments.
Language Proficiency
To have a successful internship at MIUSA, an intern should be proficient in English or ASL and have excellent English writing skills. The degree of interaction and the need for spontaneous use of English will depend on the project.
International Applicants
Please note that MIUSA is unable to sponsor visas for international internship applicants at this time. Non-US citizens who are already in the US (for study, etc.) are welcome to apply.
