Intern at Mobility International USA
If your dream career involves disability rights, international development, international exchange, or non-profit management, an internship at MIUSA is your opportunity to gain experience while working at an internationally recognized and respected mission-driven organization!
Commitment
Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is a US-based nonprofit organization with the mission to empower people with disabilities around the world through international exchange and international development. MIUSA sponsors internships for undergraduates and graduates year-round, and internships typically last 3-6 months. Opportunities currently available depend on program needs. Interns must be able to commit to at least 10 hours per week.
Types of Opportunities
LOCAL INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES
Each year in Eugene, Oregon, MIUSA hosts exchanges for youth, young adults and professionals from around the world. These exchanges focus on leadership training, community service, recreation, cross-cultural learning and advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities. Exchange program interns gain skills in the areas of disability-related accommodation planning, community involvement, logistics planning, cross-cultural communication, daily logistics problem solving, and program evaluation. Interns assist MIUSA Exchange staff beginning at least one month prior to the exchange with arrangements, applications, and correspondence. The program intern helps the Exchange Coordinator set up and make arrangements for events during the program depending on his/her specific interests and skills. Following the exchange, the intern continues at least 2 weeks after the delegates leave to participate in program follow-up activities such as compiling evaluation data, report and newsletter article writing.
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND DISABILITY
Projects vary in scope, from researching international development organizations to organizing international exchange programs. Development interns assist the Program Coordinator with all aspects of a specific program, including project planning and coordination, public relations and resource development. Interns gain valuable knowledge and understanding of current international development and disability issues, as well as the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the development process.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES LEADERSHIP AND NETWORKING PROJECTS
Projects focus on the inclusion of women with disabilities in international development programs, and facilitate leadership training and international exchange of information, strategies and resources among women with disabilities around the world. Interns will assist the Project Manager with project planning and coordination, public relations, maintaining the women's information database, researching women's organizations and resource development. As a member of the growing international network of women with disabilities, MIUSA is looking for interns to continue its work in leadership development and the inclusion of women with disabilities in international development programs and activities.
COMBINATION
An intern may focus specifically on one of the above areas or combine several. This depends on the interests and skills of the intern and on the MIUSA projects available at the time of the internship. MIUSA staff work cooperatively on many projects and interns may have the chance to become involved in other projects that arise. All interns will have the opportunity to gain skills in general office maintenance and management.
