Susan Sygall to Address InterAction Members on World Disability Day

Date:

Susan Sygall will join other disabled global leaders on a panel during InterAction’s next Listening Session: Disability Inclusion in the NGO Sector, calling for more persons with disabilities to lead and contribute to the sector.

Colleagues from across the international development and humanitarian assistance community often express their interest in promoting disability inclusion in the sector, both operationally and programmatically. Raising our standards and performance on disability inclusion, across our work and around the world, is vital to the effective delivery of aid and foreign assistance.

With this call to action in mind, Susan Sygall will join other disabled global leaders on a panel during InterAction’s next Listening Session: Disability Inclusion in the NGO Sector. This virtual session will be held on Friday, December 3rd, from 9:00-10:00am ET and coincides with the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The session is closed to members of InterAction, the largest alliance of international NGOs and partners in the United States.

InterAction convenes this timely session to both celebrate the UN Day of Persons with Disabilities and to acknowledge the access and equity issues for the disability community within the sector, uplifting the leaders committed to changing the ‘business as normal’ attitude that plagues disability inclusion.

As a panelist, Susan will share her perspective as a life-long advocate and long-time InterAction member, emphasizing the vital role of diverse leaders driving change in the NGO sector. Panelists will also share their lived experiences as a person with disabilities working in the NGO sector. Participants will take away an understanding of the layered challenges of aid access to disability-led communities, the lack of services for these communities, both operationally and programmatically, and a call to commit to the necessary changes to have more persons with disabilities lead and contribute to the sector.

Other panelists include Habtamu Buli (Technical Officer, Disability Inclusion, FHI 360) and Jahan Ara Begum Hena (President, Women with Disability Development Association, Bangladesh), who is also an alum of MIUSA’s Women’s Institute on Leadership and Disabiltiy (WILD). The event will be moderated by InterAction CEO Sam Worthington.
